Task: Video games must effectively use narratives to engage audiences. To what extent do you agree.3/14/2020 I agree to a certain extent with this statement. Although it is definitely necessary for a video game to have a very good narrative it is also important the other factors are up to standards (graphics, sound design, art). A franchise like Tomb Raider wouldn't have been successful without a good engaging narrative. When people play games they want to be distracted from the real world, video games are a way to past time (uses & gratifications) so in order for people to be entertained and to make them stay, you would require a narrative that is engaging. On a smaller scale such as mobile gaming however, it isn't as important to have a really engaging narrative. This is because mobile gaming is a form of casual gaming. Mobile games are also meant to past time, however because the game is being played on a mobile device such as an iPhone or android, the developers choose not to invest their time in the narrative as it would probably drain the mobile device's power or maybe that the device would not be able to handle it. So, in mobile games such as Lara Croft Go, the developers invest time in the game and sound design and less not the actual graphics. As a result, the game has won multiple awards such as the Apple bet design award of 2015 without much of a narrative. The app purely relies on the fact that Lara Croft is a franchise and already has a story meaning most people would know her backstory anyway. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum your mobile game could invest more time in the narrative and less on the sound design and graphics. One game like this is the Kim Kardashian mobile game. The narrative follows you as a growing social media influencer, being helped by big figures such as Kim Kardashian. The game was popular with a lot of younger people as the looked up to Kim Kardashian and wanted to be like her when they grew up. The audience identified themselves with the character when playing the game (Bulmer and Katz).
