Thrasher Magazine Analysis
Tatler Magazine Analysis
Designs and layout:
The model covers up most of the magazine cover causing the buy/sell lines to overlap her a bit including the masthead. This could tell us that the model isn't very famous or widely known because of the fact that most of the text overlaps her. In other tatler magazines like the one featuring princess Diana, she is covering the masthead with her head. The picture is also taken with the rule of thirds technique which contains a 3x3 grid on the photo which allow the picture to be layed out nicely. Typography: The font for the masthead is used in every Tatler magazine. The only thing they change is the color on different magazines. They use black and white for the buy/sell lines and make the bottom text a bright pink to stand out. They use a large size for the masthead. The masthead also covers part of the models head. The bottom text is also similar in size and coloured pink. |
Non-verbal codes:
She's wearing very high end clothes and her neck line is quite low exposing her cleavage. The costume contains gold which is bright and catches the eye. She is also wearing a lot of makeup. This can relate to the male gaze theory where the way she wore these clothes can appeal to men. The image of the model is taken in a background of what looks like a garden. The color of the background really match well with the color palette of the magazine. The mise en scene tells us that the model is wealthy judging by the gold on her clothes including the pearl necklace.
Verbal codes:
The text that says 'The new posh' tells us that the magazine is targeted towards 'posh' people or people who make a lot of money. The adjective 'new' has connotations that this is meant for the newer or younger generation of 'posh' people. The buy/sell lines also imply that the magazine is targeted towards younger people like millennial's with lots of news about today's celebrities (James Cordens LA life) and fashion (She looks good in pearls). The buy/sell lines also give us a hint of whats in the magazine.
Color palette:
They use a very bright and vivid selection of color that catches the idea. The bright gold and pink go well together along with ta hint of green in the background. The green in the background and the gold she is wearing can represent wealth and prosperity as gold can be very expensive. The pink gives us a hint of feminism and contrasts greatly with the background.
Photographic codes:
The photo in the magazine is cut from a wider image with more of the green background with the leaves. The editor could have wanted to see more of the model rather than the background and he/she may have thought that the background may have been too distracting. The angle of which the photo was shot from is neutral and she is looking into the camera directly addressing us, causing her eyes to follow us everywhere.

Reveal magazine csp
Reveal magazine is a lowerclass version of Tatler magazine where instead of writing about fashion only, they focus on celebrity gossip such as what they eat or whether or not they found a partner in a relationship. This kind of gossip generates from reality tv shows popular in Britain, so they usually use photos of celebs from England or in this case also use a picture of Beyonce. People who are in the lower or middle class tend to go for these types of magazines. Areas like central London don't have many people reading it as central London is a more expensive place to live. People who live in central London tend to go for expensive magazines like Tatler rather than Reveal. Magazines like reveal also have a completely different choice of colors to use on their magazine covers. While Tatler goes for a more posh and fashionable choice of colors, magazines like reveal use very bright and pink-purple colors, stereo typically for women. Magazines like reveal also tend to be way cheaper than Tatler which expands their audiences. They also provide lots of anchorage text that gives context to these images (e.g KATIE PLOTS SECRET MEETINGS WITH PETE).
Reveal Magazine Analysis
Designs and layout: The magazine is layed out in way where there is an abundance of celebrity pictures scattered on the cover. The pictures also cover up the masthead, telling us that the celebs have more significance than the magazine itself. The price of the magazine is also place on the top left of the cover telling us that it is very cheap and meant for the lower or middle class. The cover also contains lots of buy/sell lines and anchorage text trying to hook the customer into buying it. Typography: The font style they use is pretty normal. They use bright colors for these fonts. Most of the "important text" is in yellow which is used to direct our attention. The anchorage text or main text is big and the buy/sell lines are small. Non-verbal codes: A lot of the celebrities on here are usually wearing normal clothes rather than fashionable or expensive clothes. This is because these photos are usually taken by paparazzi who take pictures of them when they look the most vulnerable. Most of the images can be used on websites where they can dish on celebrity gossip and what not. Most of the images used are of celebrities doing normal things. Reveal magazine is published by Hearts which is a company that also publishes magazines like ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping |
Magazine Idea:
Name: The Red Curb
Prices:$1 Magazine type: Skating Audience: This Magazine would typically appeal to a younger audience, typically about 15-19 years of age. However this magazine is about skating and can appeal to older audiences. Since most people who usually look at this magazines or watch skateboarding videos usually don't work, this would probably appeal to the working class people Layout: This magazine will not contain a lot of writing on the front cover as the main image will cover the whole page. The masthead of the magazine will be small so the full image is visible. Terminology: The terminology in the front cover may confuse regular people, however skaters will understand what it means and that directly pin points the audience type to be for skaters. Colours: The red texts are supposed to catch the customers eye so they can read the buy lines and the text below stating the contents of the magazine. Main image:The image is very big and very important than the masthead as it is going behind the person. |
